Notes on Methods Used to Estimate State Rates and Numbers of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

Deaths

US and state-specific mortality rates

Data source:  National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Multiple-Cause-of-Death Public Use Data files

Years:  1995-1997

Case inclusion:  Deaths with a TBI-related International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision (ICD-9) code (800, 801, 803, 804, 850-854, 873, 905, or 907) listed anywhere in the sequence of conditions resulting in death

            US mortality rate = (# of TBI deaths in 1995 + # of TBI deaths in 1996 + # of TBI deaths in 1997) x 100,000

                                                     (US population 1995 + US population 1996 + US population 1997)

State mortality rate = (# of state TBI deaths in 1995 + # of state TBI deaths in 1996 + # of TBI state deaths in 1997) x 100,000

                                                                 (State population 1995 + State population 1996 + State population 1997)

Hospitalizations

For states with TBI surveillance

(Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Utah)

Data source: State TBI surveillance systems

Years:  Preliminary 1995-1996 data

Case inclusion:  Described in CDC’s Guidelines for Surveillance of Central Nervous System Injury (Atlanta, 1995)

For states without statewide TBI surveillance

State hospitalization rate = US hospitalization rate x (State mortality rate/US mortality rate)

US Hospitalization rate =

(# of surviving hospital discharges in 1995 and 1996 in the 13 surveillance states + Sacramento County, CA)  x 100,000

(1995 and 1996 populations of the 13 surveillance states + Sacramento County, CA)

Emergency Department (ED) Visits

US ED visit rate

Data source:  NCHS National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey

Years: 1995-1996

US ED rate = [(Total number of TBI ED visits in US in 1995 and 1996) / (Total US population in 1995 and 1996)] x 100,000

State ED rate = US ED rate x (State mortality rate/US mortality rate)

Disability

Estimated proportion of nonfatal TBI-related hospitalizations resulting in disability at one year = 0.354

Data source: Colorado TBI Registry and Follow-up Study

            Years: Preliminary 1996-1997 data

State disability rate = 0.354 x State hospitalization rate

State numbers from rates

State number = (State rate/100,000) x State population
